In the year of our Lord 1614, strange things are happening in Turku, Finland: on his way to the 30-year war, King Gustav II Adolf has arrived in the city to enjoy the executions of his subjects and to discover a revolutionary Renaissance innovation: the fork..
By far the best comedians of their time - the artists of the Aurinko Theatre - are locked up in the dungeon of Turku Castle. And there would be nothing out of the ordinary about it, unless the powers that be intended to execute them the next morning. Under the new national economic policy, the poor have already been hanged. Next on the execution list are the artists, those brazen wingmen of society.
Persecuted artists hijack the sailing ship Suomen Jwansen, anchored on the Aura River, and decide to become pirates. The aim of the raid is to get enough capital and riches to make Finland want them back. Since the Swan is not adequately armed, they decide to strike first at Venice, the centre of the European arms trade. The renaissance life of Venice so blinds the northern comrades that they are too greedy to stop looting when the weather is good.
As the smoke clears, the Catholic Inquisition discovers that its priceless treasure has gone the way of the Protestant junkies. A band of Renaissance princes sets off in furious pursuit, and the ships speed towards the stormy Caribbean Sea. The entire world economy is now at stake, the dark voodoo drums of the demon of sadness are threatening death, and this battle can only end in tragic disaster.
Juha Mustanoja's written & directed work Laulujoutsen on hillitön historiallinen piraattispektaakkeli, jonka tyrskyisän pinnan alla piilee kysymys talouden ja ihmisarvon vaietuista yhteyksistä. Näyttämöteos on kolmas osa esityssarjasta, jonka aiemmat teokset ovat olleet Thalia-palkittu Maa-Tuska (2015) sekä kiitetty Atlantis (2018), joka kantaesitettiin Kansallisteatterissa.
