Universum consists of four professional theaters: Aurinkoteatteri, Teater Mars, Sirius Teatern and Teatteri Venus . Universum makes it possible to do such things together that are difficult to do alone. Universum claims that theater work is a free, non-commercial and independent creation. Thus, one of Universum's central tasks is to prepare space for its artists to create performances according to their own conditions.

Universum calls for artistic freedom, that is, the idea that the creative process can look like anything. Supporting the strange, the erratic, and the different is an important counterforce to streamlined mass culture. Universum is the idea that the societal change does not take place in the big gigantic stories, but in the dialogue with the audience, in the diversity and in the encounter with what is different.
